Note for 20250706 - Sons in Faith - Part 10 - 1 Timothy 6 - Masters & Servants
Sons in Faith
1 Timothy
Part 10 - 1 Timothy 6 - Masters & Servants
1 Timothy 6:1-21 KJV
[1] Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. [2] And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort. [3] If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; [4] he is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, [5] perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. [6] But godliness with contentment is great gain. [7] For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. [8] And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. [9] But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. [10] For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. [11] But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. [12] Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. [13] I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; [14] that thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: [15] which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; [16] who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. [17] Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; [18] that they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; [19] laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. [20] O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: [21] which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen. The first to Timothy was written from Laodicea, which is the chiefest city of Phrygia Pacatiana.

I cannot help myself but ask, "What are you living for?" The title of today's note might be strange to some, for others it will remind them of a song; but the one who is a slave will know how he is bound under a yoke of demand, having no control over much of his days. Now, I must inform you that misunderstanding may bring you to a thought of discontentment. You see, modern language has disguised the state of things. So, I will ask you like this, who has control of your days? By whose demands are you moved away from that which you would rather be doing?
(This is not the only subject in this morning's reading, but because of deception, it will get the greater part of consideration today.)
Have you got an answer to my question yet? Who directs your days, in other words, who is the master and who is servant? Now just in case you think, "where is this coming from?"
1 Timothy 6:14-15 KJV
"...our Lord Jesus Christ: [15] which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate (ruler/sovereign,) the King of kings, and Lord of lords;"
Now, Paul is speaking to Timothy about the matter of masters and slaves at the opening of this chapter, but remember, chapters and verses were only added much later to the Bible, so in truth, all of this is one letter Timothy received from Paul. He gives instructions on both, working for a believing master and a non-believing master. So, the focus of this note started out with the section of being content with what you have, and later Timothy is reminded that Jesus Christ is the sovereign, King of kings and Lord of lords.
If you truly want to understand this we might have to swap out the term master for boss or manager. And of course, even the manager has a boss, because he gets payment, for which he gave up his time and labour for reward. And, at the top of this, there is the owner (CEO or business owner,) which resembles somewhat of a pyramid scheme. There is a top down control system, where those at the top profit from those beneath them. I suppose, a person could by this then also ask, who is masters in this world then?
Be content with what you have. It is such a profound concept that the Word teaches us. Because in discontentment, we strive for more in this world. Do you see it yet? In contentment comes liberty, for you do not sell yourself for more than what you need.
Now, I know that this may bring conversations, and even this line of speaking is warned against by Paul to Timothy in today's scripture. Those that are weary of their worldly work, do you feel like a slave? It is very important to find the real slave driver, in this want for more. You see, Paul speaks of contentment, and some cannot have contentment with the basics and a world designed to fuel the want for more through advertising, to culture "to envy" and "to covet" in a "be all you can be" and "have your dreams come true" kind of way, fueling in itself the lusts of the flesh. The worldly systems are designed to lure man into sin, especially our modern age designs. The mobile phone or car you have is never good enough, right? There is always a better and newer version available, right? Even the very base of concern has been altered of what qualifies as a need, and modern life considers luxuries as needs.
1 Timothy 6:5 KJV
[5] perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
https://bible.com/bible/1/1ti.6.5.KJV
"...gain is godliness…" is that not how this world works? And I say that in disagreement, for gain is often the source of wickedness, or it comes by wickedness. How often are the houses of the rich furnished by the efforts and strife of the poor? It is a concept masked in the modern age. To give to the poor is to make a loan to GOD, according to Solomon. What is gained from the poor then? Some of it has become so corrupt that it is a requirement by law.
Now that you have seen the world as it is, let us look at the beginning of this chapter again.
1 Timothy 6:1-2 KJV
[1] Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. How far have we got in this chapter? It is full of rich teaching by Paul to Timothy and he exhorts Timothy to stand in these things for the sake of the church. In the Voice recording of this note, I hope to get into a bit more of this, as we finish with this letter today.
1 Timothy 6:11-14 KJV
[11] But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Like Paul to Timothy, so I to you, brothers and sisters of the common faith in Jesus Christ. We are in this world, but not of it. And because we are not of this world, we must be able to tell what is the world's and what is GOD'S. Render unto the masters of this world what is theirs, but unto God what is His. As long as there is need, we will interact and sojourn here in the world, and in our exchange with this world, we are called to exemplary conduct, as Paul lists to Timothy. But, the day will come when there is no more master over the soul, when the soul goes to be with GOD. Choose thus not a god of this world, not by want or greed.
1 Timothy 6:7 KJV
[7] For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

It is helpful to remain in the reminder that our reward is with Christ.

Verse of The Day
From the YouVersion Bible App (Expanded from verse 6)
Romans 8:6-8 KJV
[6] For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. [7] Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. [8] So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

Quick Note:
I wanted to expand the verse of the day for you. In fact, for those who do not know, Romans 8 can serve as the chain that links to our Anchor in Jesus Christ. Do not hold on to one verse only from this remarkable chapter, hold on to it all.
Shalom
