Sons in Faith
1 Timothy
Part 5 - 1 Timothy 1 - In Love
1 Timothy 1:1-20 NASB2020
[1] Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope, [2] To Timothy, my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. [3] Just as I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, to remain on at Ephesus so that you would instruct certain people not to teach strange doctrines, [4] nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to useless speculation rather than advance the plan of God, which is by faith, so I urge you now. [5] But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from a sincere faith. [6] Some people have strayed from these things and have turned aside to fruitless discussion, [7] wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions. [8] But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, [9] realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and worldly, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, [10] for the sexually immoral, homosexuals, slave traders, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, [11] according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted. [12] I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service, [13] even though I was previously a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; [14] and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus. [15] It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost. [16] Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost sinner Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life. [17] Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. [18] This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight, [19] keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith. [20] Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, so that they will be taught not to blaspheme.

Title: In Love (Charity)
1 Timothy 1:5 NASB2020
[5] But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from a sincere faith.

Having this as the root of our movement for Jesus Christ is fundamentally different from speaking from a place of dislike or even hate. It changes the nature of the delivery of the message of Good Hope in Jesus Christ, don't you think?
Knowing this now, can you see that the method of our conversation is not that we are better than the sinner, still trapped in the illusions of this world, being led astray unto the sure judgment of GOD that will come. No, it is in love, that such may be grabbed out of the fire before they are consumed away by the desires of the flesh.

[8] But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully,

Now Paul explains this carefully here, but is this not what we see today at work. People trying to teach the law without an understanding of it. If we can move from a place of love in our teaching, then we work for the salvation of a man's soul, not in condemnation (as is clearly shown in the last verse today, how he handed those men over to Satan so that they may learn not to blaspheme. This is not a unique statement by Paul either.
1 Corinthians 5:5 NASB2020
[5] I have decided to turn such a person over to Satan for the destruction of his body, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.

But, as with all teaching it must come from a place of love, knowing as the flesh is troubled the soul will meet the turning point, where it cannot continue without the help of GOD. If someone won't be corrected or listen to sound advice and insist on roaming where wolves walk. Still, it is in love, not hate; and we plead with the LORD for such a person.
Paul gives a powerful testimony here, of how the Lord Jesus chose him as an example of His mercy and grace (I say in my own words.) I say this in my words, because I carry a similar message, friends. The LORD has been long-suffering with me, and indeed, my flesh was troubled greatly to bring my soul back to GOD. You see, the message is almost more clear if you carry that testimony in you, rather than just reading it from the Word. For me it would have been better if I were just obedient, and not so strong-willed. But, when my flesh was broken... When I had my moment on the barrier of life and death my choice could be made in truth. And in my case, even that took time. Now, my testimony is too long to write here in one sitting, but to those who listen to the Daily Note on YouTube, I might give some of it there today. (Though it will probably only be uploaded by tomorrow.) To hand someone over like this is not something to be done lightly, stepping out of the way so GOD may plead with the soul through troubles, so Paul explains the process in 1 Corinthians 5. Warn the person in that manner first. And when you do, also know that person will go through much if he is hard of hearing, like I was.
Something that should not be dismissed today, even if it takes a little longer, is the list that Paul gives here of the sinful nature, who the Law is intended for.
1 Timothy 1:9-11 NASB2020
[9] realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and worldly, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, [10] for the sexually immoral, homosexuals, slave traders, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, [11] according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.
https://bible.com/bible/2692/1ti.1.9-11.NASB2020
The way you can identify if the law is for you, is if anything on this list convicts you. Does this mean that you are a hopeless case? Did you know this list would have convicted Paul, when the LORD called him. He was right there at the stoning of Stephen. The LORD, friends, qualifies those He sends with a message. They usually carry a testimony for the message. Paul is an example that the Lord Jesus Christ can save sinners.
Now, as far as the series, "Sons of Faith" goes, Paul clearly states his love and role to Timothy right here in the greeting today. Why is that important, friends? Because of that love, the message received in these letters can be taken with a high level of confidence. It is the conversation that a loving father would have with his son. To these, Paul says it as it is.
Now, there were matters in today's reading that may offend some. And in fact, some of it might even be called "hate speech" by offenders, and the modern law of man permits what is abomination before the LORD. Just remember, it is not the person that is hated, but the sin. And sin is something someone can walk away from and not belong to any more, so there is always hope, even if it requires a handing over of the flesh so the soul may be saved. I tried to say it as tactfully as possible. Remember, sin is condemned in the flesh.
In love then, do that which you are called to do, not just an ordinary love, but charity.
Selah, Shalom.
