Matthew 20:1-34 KJV

[1]  For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. [2] And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. [3] And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, [4] and said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. [5] Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. [6] And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? [7] They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. [8] So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. [9] And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. [10] But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. [11] And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, [12] saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. [13] But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? [14] Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. [15] Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? [16] So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen. [17] And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them, [18] Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, [19] and shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again. [20] Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. [21] And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. [22] But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. [23] And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. [24] And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. [25] But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. [26] But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; [27] and whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: [28] even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. [29] And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. [30] And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. [31] And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David. [32] And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you? [33] They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened. [34] So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.

Fair Reward

This morning, as the world celebrates Father's Day, we get a glimpse again into the Kingdom of Heaven by a parable spoken by Jesus Christ. The Son, testifying of the Father and the Kingdom of Him He loves. This fair Reward parable is unlike the "fairness" that the world portrays, and once more confirms that GOD our Father does not reward as the world rewards, but as it pleases Him. Jesus, the Son of GOD, from whom we will receive our reward, will do as He learned from His Father.

Shall we look at this parable again? Are you at peace, that he that gave his life to GOD in the last hour of his life, might receive the same reward as those who served GOD from their birth? Are you okay, that the sinner on the cross was saved, right before his execution, and yet got to be with Christ in paradise? It is in the hand of GOD to give as He pleases, and Christ is in His right hand. I dare to say that Jesus Christ is the right Hand of the Father in all the references we read thereof in the Word of GOD. Jesus will do according to the Will of His and our Father in Heaven, especially concerning the matters of the Heavenly Kingdom. The first shall be last and the last first. This concept is beautifully given to us by Christ here in this chapter.

Why do we then still get upset about this in our own lives, friends? Even the one who does not quite pull his weight at work gets paid, not? And to use the parable in this chapter, the one that does not come to work does not receive pay at all. Why then do we assume that we are entitled to more, at work or at home and among friends. Should we not be content with the provisions of GOD? Should we not make it work, without complaint and murmuring? Is there someone at work whom you think should be fired? What if GOD would have worked for the same reason, who would see the Kingdom of GOD?

Look at these two blind men at the end of the chapter, did they not follow after Christ when they were healed? And yet, there were those that told them to be quiet. Yes, by those that were following Christ already. Do we silence others because we deem them not worthy, an alcoholic, druggie or a riotous man? Is salvation not available to all?

Let the labourer come in, and do what he is called to do, and leave rewards to GOD our Father. Once more we are at this instance where we look at man putting his nose where it does not belong, and "as we judge so will we be judged" is that not written too?

Of course, this would not be complete if we do not look at the matter of James and John here. What reward was in their expectation? Or, as much, that which was communicated by their mother? Shows you the heart of a mother, right? Wanting what is best for her sons, but Christ explains it is not His to give, but that it is in His Father's hand. Shall we look at where Christ said to call no one on earth father? For we all have the same Father, even He that made us.

What are your expectations? From those you have been given here and to whom you have been given by our Father in Heaven? What are your expectations of GOD? Will you become like these labourers if GOD should choose to honour someone above you? Can you be disappointed, even to the point where you may walk away from your salvation?

It is Father's Day, so I will say what must be said, mankind needs an attitude adjustment, don't we? We must get our act together, and get on with the purpose we were created for. Who but the Father knows that in full, and beside Him, who has He revealed that too. Did Christ not say, He speaks such things as He heard of His Father? Who are we listening to then?

Friends, what is a fair Reward? Did Christ not ask if they are ready to go though the same baptism He would be baptized with? And, that they would. He was not speaking of baptism by water friends, He was speaking about baptism by trials and tribulations, even unto death. All but John, of His disciples, had a martyr's end here on earth. We saw that Christ spoke of the twelve crowns yesterday, set apart for them, but did Judas not fall away and give up his seat?

My friends, all that we can possibly offer GOD is contained in our free will. You know that right? A fair reward would see us all go to the second death. But, by the mercy of GOD and His Son, there is a reward waiting for us with Christ Jesus. That, like our redemption, is in the Father's Hand. He will save whom He is pleased to save, and will reward as He please to reward, from what is His to give.

Selah, Shalom.
