Matthew 1:1-25 NASB2020

[1] The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham: [2] Abraham fathered Isaac, Isaac fathered Jacob, and Jacob fathered Judah and his brothers. [3] Judah fathered Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez fathered Hezron, and Hezron fathered Ram. [4] Ram fathered Amminadab, Amminadab fathered Nahshon, and Nahshon fathered Salmon. [5] Salmon fathered Boaz by Rahab, Boaz fathered Obed by Ruth, and Obed fathered Jesse. [6] Jesse fathered David the king. David fathered Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah. [7] Solomon fathered Rehoboam, Rehoboam fathered Abijah, and Abijah fathered Asa. [8] Asa fathered Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat fathered Joram, and Joram fathered Uzziah. [9] Uzziah fathered Jotham, Jotham fathered Ahaz, and Ahaz fathered Hezekiah. [10] Hezekiah fathered Manasseh, Manasseh fathered Amon, and Amon fathered Josiah. [11] Josiah fathered Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. [12] After the deportation to Babylon: Jeconiah fathered Shealtiel, and Shealtiel fathered Zerubbabel. [13] Zerubbabel fathered Abihud, Abihud fathered Eliakim, and Eliakim fathered Azor. [14] Azor fathered Zadok, Zadok fathered Achim, and Achim fathered Eliud. [15] Eliud fathered Eleazar, Eleazar fathered Matthan, and Matthan fathered Jacob. [16] Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah. [17] So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations. Conception and Birth of Jesus [18] Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit. [19] And her husband Joseph, since he was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. [20] But when he had thought this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. [21] She will give birth to a Son; and you shall name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” [22] Now all this took place so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled: [23] “Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a Son, and they shall name Him Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.” [24] And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, [25] but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he named Him Jesus.

Note for 20250521

Today I bring this Matthew 1 to you out of the NASB 2020, so that the Genealogy of Joseph the husband of Mary by whom Christ was born of the Holy Spirit will not be foreign to you in language. I find it interesting that it is 42 generations from Abraham to Jesus, when I think it over. Or shall I say it in a way that might grab your attention, forty and two generations, and I am once more left in wonder how consistent the Word of GOD is in even the small things, that we might not understand in full yet. At least. I do not yet.

Matthew 1:19-20 NASB2020

[19] And her husband Joseph, since he was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly. [20] But when he had thought this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

I often think things over friends. Like here, why is the genealogy of Joseph given to us, even though it is clearly said, that Christ was not born of Joseph, but of the Holy Spirit, and it matches with the other accounts, just as we have read in Luke most recently. Just like the 42 generations, I do not know, it has not yet been revealed to me, and all that I might say on that was spoken by men.

What I have found is this: Judah's wife was a Canaanite (Genesis 38:2) and Boaz's wife Ruth was a Moabite as we learn from the book of Ruth. In Joshua chapters 2 and 6, we also learn about Rahab, the mother of Boaz to whom Ruth was married. Rahab was the prostitute in Jericho that hid the spies of Israel. Even so, we learn that Solomon was the son of her that David took of his friend Uriah, and had him sent to the Frontline when he knew that Bathsheba was pregnant with his child. (This is recorded in 2 Samuel 11-12 and 1 Kings 1-2.)

Now, in Luke 3 we find a genealogy which is believed to be the line of Jesus through Mary his mother, but it is not written like that precisely. There are differences in the two accounts that would indicate that. It still goes to King David, but through Nathan his son, not Solomon. But Nathan too was a son by David and Bathsheba. (2 Samuel 5:14, 1 Chronicles 3:5 and 14:4) But, what shall all of this bring for us, though it be here for us to read, can it save us? The Apostle Paul was not silent on this.

1 Timothy 1:3-4 NASB2020

[3] Just as I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, to remain on at Ephesus so that you would instruct certain people not to teach strange doctrines, [4] nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to useless speculation rather than advance the plan of God, which is by faith, so I urge you now.

Titus 3:9 NASB2020

[9] But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are useless and worthless.

Paul also wrote that the carnal mind is at enmity with GOD, and what is thinking then about? As I study the Bible, I often have a matter of thinking coming against the faith and what I know in the Spirit to be true. The question is, is Jesus the son of man through David and the Son of GOD through the Holy Spirit, and I believe these accounts confirms both. Just as Joseph thought about what to do with Mary, but was persuaded by the Angel in his dream, we must choose what we believe. Paul makes it clear that these studies of genealogies bring strife and disputes, in which I have no interest in. After all, it is a matter of faith by which we are saved. (John 3:16)

These matters are not contradictions, and will tie up your life in search of all things therein. Some are called to it, and I have looked into it a bit. But, in the end, it is of the faith in your heart. It is written too, that now we know in part, and I am okay with that. But, what can be known, even by faith that I hold close in Jesus Christ. After all, it is written here that Joseph was a righteous man.

Romans 8:38-39 NASB2020

[38] For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, [39] nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
