According to Luke

Part 108 - Luke 14 - Sinners and Saints

Watch at:

Luke 15:1-32 KJV

[1] Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. [2] And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.  [3] And he spake this parable unto them, saying, [4] What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? [5] And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. [6] And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. [7] I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.  [8]  Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? [9] And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost. [10] Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.  [11] And he said, A certain man had two sons: [12] and the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living. [13] And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. [14] And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. [15] And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. [16] And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. [17] And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! [18] I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, [19] and am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. [20] And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. [21] And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. [22] But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: [23] and bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: [24] for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. [25] Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing. [26] And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. [27] And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound. [28] And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him. [29] And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: [30] but as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. [31] And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. [32] It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

Note for 20250509

Two days ago, I was under the weather with a bug familiar to the change of season. It is at that time when it was pressed on my heart to pick up the pace of this series we are busy with. Now, for a long time I have also said, it is about the scriptures, not my notes, and yet, for them that could hear, I am sure that there came conformations too. So today, the entire chapter Luke 15. I feel comfortable with picking up the pace, after all, we have covered the books of John and Mark already.

These parables Christ shares here are familiar to us, surely all of you know of the lost son, coin and sheep. Sure, we can look at the joy proclaimed over that which was found that was lost. We can look into depth again. Of the lost son, and how the merciful father received him back. We can even look at how these parables resemble the sinners that the Pharisees and scribes looked down upon. All of that, I am sure you have heard before.

Today, I would like to look at those who took part in the spoil of the young man's riches. Yes, even to the citizen to whom the son bound himself in labour, like a slave. Working but still falling short in need for eating his daily Bread. How might the father look at those who ate the substance of his son? If he would have to come and judge them? Now surely, we would have to speculate? That is, until we understand what this portrays. You see, this parable does not speak of judgment, but if the lost son portrays the sinner, we know what will happen to the godless at Christ's return. Furthermore, we have read of the White Throne judgment, even all of Revelation and prophecies. The question I have for you to consider on this day, is how we might play a part in the agony of the lost children of the Most High GOD? Did we eat their substance? Did we refuse them help?

Usually I would point you again to read Matthew 25:31-46 again, but for today, let us hear what John the Baptist testifies of Jesus Christ in Matthew 3:

Matthew 3:11-12 KJV

[11] I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: [12] whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

Of course, for a much clearer picture, we can read Revelation 20:11-15 for the White Throne judgment. But, it really is throughout the Bible, whenever we read of the righteous and the wicked, even how Christ said that we will be judged according to our works. We have become so accustomed in our modern time to look at others and point with our fingers at their shame. My question today is, what would we look like, if the fingers are pointed at us? Are we not sinners too?

You see, the Lord left us with an instruction that we should love one another, even as Christ has loved us. What covers a multitude of sin? I want to share another verse with you, but preempt it with a reminder that we will be judged according to how we judge others: (Luke 6:37 & Matthew 7:1)

John 20:22-23 KJV

[22] And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: [23] whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.

Do you consider us ready yet? Aren't we all guilty of the same? That being sin? Did Christ just come for you and me?

John 1:29 KJV

[29] The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

We know that a time is coming when there will be no more sin, not? Now some will be washed clean in repentance, and what about the sinners that do not repent? Is that not dealt with above too? But sin will be no more. If we then cleave unto sin, then the lake of fire is awaiting. If we repent, Christ has paid the price of sin in our stead and we are forgiven. But sin, and the wicked, will be no more.

Remember, Christ came for the sinners. Like a doctor who goes to the sick, Christ came for us. How then, do we treat the lost sheep of Christ?

Selah, Shalom.

Verse of The Day

From the YouVersion Bible App (Extended from verse 14)

John 13:13-17 KJV

[13] Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. [14] If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. [15] For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. [16] Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. [17] If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
