Luke 7:1-17 KJV

[1] Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum. [2] And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. [3] And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. [4] And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this: [5] for he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue. [6] Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof: [7] wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. [8] For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. [9] When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. [10] And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.  [11] And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. [12] Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. [13] And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. [14] And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. [15] And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. [16] And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. [17] And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judæa, and throughout all the region round about.

Note for 20250411

Now, let me start out by admitting that I can not possibly speak to the title of this Note by myself, nor can I speak of it in full. No, this is but a peek into the nature of Jesus Christ, something that leaves me in wonder and awe.

In today's reading we learn about the centurion and the widow in Nain. A centurion with a heart for the people he lived amongst and a widow who saw the end of her only son. I wonder at how Jesus saw them. He gives glory to the centurion for his faith, not meeting him. He raises the dead son of the widow for the compassion He found for her.

Luke 7:9 KJV

[9] When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

On the one end you have a man that is not a Jew with faith that outshines the Jews, yet had so much good report that he could request of the elders of the Jews to go to Christ on his behalf and they did. A man with power, yet so humble, that he did not count himself worthy that Christ enter his house. He, that could order others around, being humble before Christ. Yes, and this spoke to Christ of this man's faith. That the Son of GOD can speak so well of a man He hasn't met face to face, that is part of how I wonder at His nature. That He can find glory for a man.

Luke 7:13-14 KJV

[13] And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. [14] And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.

His compassion for the widow lands softly in me. I too have compassion for the widows, those who have been left behind by their husband. Maybe, this speaks specifically to me because of circumstance, for I am the only son of my mother who is now a widow, bedridden now for almost 5 years. Let's just say, it brings understanding to me, how GOD would have me cease from all I had to do for myself, to take care of my mother, which is a grace from GOD for her, and a blessing for me. I do not have to receive recompense, not on earth or in heaven, for I have been blessed already.

It is the nature of GOD, and Christ by extension, that leaves me to wonder after His Majesty. That GOD can take pity on a widow and her son, and marvel at the faith of a non-Jew man. That Jesus could die for this world, even by the Love of our Father to usward. If the Love of the Father was not in Christ, how would He willingly walk to the cross for a sinner like me? So, I marvel at the nature of Christ. I marvel after the love of God.

Of course, in our reading we only find a peep into the nature of GOD. And by my testimony, you can know that GOD does not change, for He had compassion on my mother too. Did Elijah, a prophet of GOD, not find compassion for a widow too?

Now, we have read how Jesus said that He and the Father are one, and that He does not speak anything other than He hears of His Father in Heaven and that He does as He sees the Father do. Friends, can I show you something about not only the nature of Jesus Christ, but also the Nature of GOD? Let me show you by the Nature we find by a Man of GOD, with whom the Holy Spirit was.

1 Kings 17:8-24 KJV

[8] And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, [9] Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee. [10] So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink. [11] And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand. [12] And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die. [13] And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son. [14] For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth. [15] And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days. [16] And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah. [17] And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him. [18] And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son? [19] And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed. [20] And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son? [21] And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again. [22] And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. [23] And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth. [24] And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.

GOD does not change my friends. He is the same as always. Do not think that GOD forgets the widow, or the fatherless. Neither let you mind go to the place, that GOD does not have favour for those who obeyed His instruction. Look how Jesus marvels at the faith of this centurion.

How do we live to please GOD then? Do you remember Matthew 25:40 yet?

Matthew 25:40 KJV

[40] And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

I marvel at the consistency of GOD. Not by Christ and even Elijah alone, but a consistency we read of all throughout the Word of GOD. We read of the fruit of the Spirit, was it not present with Elijah too? What of the mercy David had for Saul, when Saul was sleeping and vulnerable to David, that he could take his life?

I have spoken a few times on the next now, that we learn to know GOD by the Word of GOD, and Who better to see that nature from than in the Word made flesh in Jesus Christ? By the Word we can learn to know GOD. We can see how He loves us. I marvel at that, as I look at mankind. Created in the image of GOD, and I am still searching deeper within. Can that nature manifest in me? By the Word of GOD, I can read and marvel at the Wonder of GOD. I can learn what is of GOD and what is not. I can adopt the things of GOD, and purge from me that which is not. How do I share all of that here, in a short word?

As always, I invite you to the Word of GOD. Learn from GOD.

Selah, Shalom

Verse of The Day

From the YouVersion Bible App (Expanded from verse 13)

Philippians 4:11-14 KJV

[11] Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. [12] I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. [13] I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. [14] Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction.

Note on Verse of the Day

You know, each time this verse comes up in the daily verse, I am concerned that many only know the one verse and not the context. Look how this is part of Paul saying that he has learned to be content with the state he is in, and that he can do all things in Christ, but note how he also praises those who have done well to speak to his need.

We should help one another, we should provide for one another's needs. That is doing well, but also, that in the lack of that we can still be content with the mercy of GOD, that He can strengthen us to endure all.

Please do not misunderstand this verse without context. And yet, is verse 13 true on its own too.
