Luke 6:39-49 KJV
[39] And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? [40] The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. [41] And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? [42] Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye. [43] For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. [44] For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. [45] A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. [46] And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? [47] Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: [48] he is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. [49] But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

Luke 6:46 KJV

This section is best known for someone that sees even the smallest fault in others, but who is unable to see all the wrong in his own life. Christ says here that it makes such a person a hypocrite, and He often speaks against hypocrites, most profoundly when He speaks against the Pharisees and Scribes.
These verses, friends, we know them. In more modern language, seeing the splinter in another's eye, but not the log in you own. These are the things that Christ spoke of, but here from our highlighted text, we can get past such things, living after the manner and instruction of our Master, Jesus Christ. Why cal Him Lord, if we do not obey His instruction?
Luke 6:40 KJV
[40] The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.

How do you teach, when you are still in the dark yourself? It is the blind leading the blind, just as Christ says here. Men can be blind, yes even I can make a mistake in understanding, but Jesus Christ is perfect. So, it is better to mold yourself after Him, than to mold yourself after me and adopt my misunderstandings. Have I not told you that I am just like you, going through this process along with you?
If we model ourselves after a man, we are making a parallax error again. Measuring the heavenly by the standards of the world. We have the Word of GOD, which is perfect. I am not speaking of translations friends, I am speaking of Jesus Christ. I remember when I was younger, we could buy bands for our arms that had a reminder of "what would Jesus do?" Verse 40 speaks of such a sentiment, that if we want to be perfect, we must become like our Master. Who is our Tutor then, Christ or a man?
Have you got any idea how much man has gotten wrong? And in a discipleship then, measured against an early tutor, we adopt the error in understanding. Each that breathes here in this world still has his own errors, learning little by little a better way in Jesus Christ, if they are not fools. Man is mostly foolish, blind to his own errors and deals with it by justification or excuse, maybe even both. But, when we look at Jesus Christ, when we hear all that He said and learn from Him, we have a Good Standard to model ourselves after.
As you remove your eyes from Christ and look at mankind, you are bound to find error, even in yourself, if you look carefully. Yes, we all fall short of the Glory of GOD, just as it is written.
It reminds me of a story I once heard, of a man that interviewed a master sculptor. (I think I heard it in a sermon,) but this man asked the sculptor, how do you get this piece of wood to look like a horse? The sculptor replied with an obvious but true answer. It is simple, he said, you just remove all that does not look like a horse. Of course, I share it with you as best as I can remember, but I think you get the point. How then do we model ourselves after Jesus Christ? We remove that which is not like Christ, and add that which is still needed to look like Him.
Is that not the basics of discipleship? That the Words of Christ shape us into what we ought to be? So, when you go through your day, just imagine if you can see in your mindseye, if Christ would do what you intend to do? In the Gospel of Jesus Christ we have all we need to learn from Him, to know His nature and the Love of GOD that brought Him to that cross that our salvation depends on.
Not like me, but like Christ. Not my words, but His. For when I measure myself against Him, I am still falling short. If you look at me, you will be disappointed at some point. I hope that it may not be the case, but I know that I am still on route myself.
You see, this section starts with the blind leading the blind. If I then admit to you that I can not see well yet, then how would you trust yourself in me? If I can see my own errors, not only can I work on that, but, by admission of my shortcomings, I am then also no longer a hypocrite. Yet, I feel like one. Because, I know that my ways are not perfect yet. When I look into the spiritual mirror, I still look like me, not Him. Of myself then, all that I can share is my own efforts. I can only share with you what I am doing in my efforts to become like Jesus Christ. And, I know that it may land on the ear strangely, but is that not what is written here?
Luke 6:40 KJV

So, if this is then a class for learning, am I not sitting on the side of those that are still learning? The Tutor must be Jesus Christ Himself. By this example, we are called to work in groups, helping one another. It is a group assignment, even though each will be graded on his own. We are not measured one against the other, we are graded on a standard and that standard is of GOD.
Selah, Shalom
