Luke 4:14-29 KJV

[14] And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. [15] And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.  [16] And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. [17] And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, [18]  The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, Because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, And recovering of sight to the blind, To set at liberty them that are bruised, [19]  To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. [20] And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. [21] And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. [22] And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son? [23] And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country. [24] And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. [25] But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; [26] but unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. [27] And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian. [28] And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, [29] And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.

Right Man - Wrong Place

No prophet is respected in his home country, these saw Jesus grow up among them and they could not receive such a profound word from Him. To them, He was the carpenter's son, not the Son of GOD.

Now, today's reading here is relatively plain to understand, isn't it? Part may be from recognising the names of the prophets Elijah and Elisha. The point made was that even these went to people other than their own, who received them and great miracles were done for them.

It makes me think again how, on the farm, when the minister's or the elder's car would turn in at the gate. You see, we could see and that gave us enough time to quickly wash our dusty hands and feet, wipe the face with a wet cloth and jump into some fancy clothes. By the time the car reached the farm yard, we would be ready to receive the man as if we ran some boutique hotel. The same was true when grandpa turned at the gate, coming back from work, spare the clothes, but that was for another reason altogether, see his hand came down quick and hard. Well, that is how I remember it.

Friends, when a person gets called to the ministry of the gospel, it is often better for that man to move to another part of the country. For, to some you can speak to, and they will have reverence for the Word you bring, but others will just say, "Ag, it is just Matt, what makes him so high and mighty?" The truth of course is that I am not high and mighty; in fact, I am the sinner they knew, saved by the Grace of GOD. But, there is something, in my case, that those that knew me can understand which strangers can't. You see, those that know me, know also of the price I have paid in my hard-headedness. They saw the bruises, and how I was healed, and yet, many will say that I just had good doctors. Yet, the doctors could testify how I was healed in the sight of them. Those that see me now, find it hard to receive how I was saved from death. So, like so many, I must speak of inner healing mostly, while I carry a testimony of a physical healing in my face. Every time you look at my face, you are beholding a miracle. For most, I will always just be another man.

Right person, wrong place; and yet, is that really true? You see, the testimony then becomes that of non-belief. Do I expect others to believe in me, or in GOD that healed me? Is it of my healing, or that GOD can heal all if it pleases Him? A Prophet of GOD is directed by God, have you not read of the man that was to return by a different path, and not to eat or sojourn in the place to which he was sent? The lion that tared him stood with his donkey at his corpse, as another removed him and laid him in his own grave. Why would a prophet of GOD then be sent to someone other than the one to whom he was sent? This is true for Elijah and Elisha here in the text too.

Now, why am I making such a story of this? You see, in the home country of Jesus, He did not perform as many miracles as what He did elsewhere, for the people could not believe in Him. Now, who has Jesus sent to continue with His work? Is it not all of us, familiar or not? Who is robbed of Salvation by non-belief? Me? No, I can shake the dust off my feet. You? Well, that depends on whether you believe it or not.

Friends and family, is the man before you the one you knew back then, before the Lord grabbed into my life? Is that not a testimony in itself? Is that man still before you, or has there been a transformation in the LORD Jesus Christ? Brothers and sisters in the faith, do not be mistaken, none of us can be saved unless we change from a worldly man into the Spirit man. You do not have to receive me, but do not neglect to receive Jesus Christ. For He stands at the door, knocking. Even here and now, by me, He is knocking.

Where are your charities unto one another, where is the love of GOD, as a testimony of your Salvation. It cannot remain business as usual. You know what I have parted with, you know what I have left behind. You know that it is GOD that sustains me by His mercy and grace. What has happened to the saying, charity starts at home? Will you hear me today?

Are you ready yet, for that which is on the way, even at the door, one foot across the threshold? Why then are you still holding on to hate and all forms of iniquity in your midst? I say again, one who does not warn his brother to repent hates him. He might as well drive a sword right through him. Yes, even those that hear and remain unchanged, even you have become haters of yourselves, preventing the Salvation of Jesus Christ unto yourself. Have you ever heard the Name, Jesus Christ of Nazareth? If you have heard, and remain unchanged, then your blood is in your own hands.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ has been preached for two thousand years now, and even the wicked curse by the same name when they bump their toe. What mercy or grace shall stand for you non-believers. Oh, but it is worse, because you have been warned, you have been told and you have rejected your salvation with respect to your own carnality. The mirrors shall testify of your self love. Your family and friends shall testify of your indulgence, lust, hate and greed. The poor will testify of your lack of care. What about the lonely? What about the frail? What about your children as you press on catching up on all your stories? What will all your possessions count for on the Day of the Lord?

How long will you still find excuses? How long will you still justify your own behaviour, don't you know the time is short? Get done what you must this day, do not even wait for later. Never hot or cold, always lukewarm and half dead. Is there a thing as half dead? Oh, we live in the valley of the shadow of death, friends; don't you know that by now?

Look at those who knew Jesus, from his hometown of Nazareth, they wanted to cast him off a cliff. And today, amongst our family and friends, who will hear the warning? Oh, the believer is kept around for his labour, not? The donkey's share of the work is left for the humble, right? My Lord and Saviour rode into Jerusalem upon a donkey, such favour has been shown to me, in whom He resides.

Will you hear me this time? Get ready, NOW!

1 John 4:11-12 KJV

[11] Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. [12] No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
