Part 8 - 1 Timothy 4 - Example of

Watch at:

1 Timothy 4:1-16 NASB2020

[1] But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, [2] by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, [3] who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. [4] For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude; [5] for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer. [6] In pointing out these things to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the good doctrine which you have been following. [7] But stay away from worthless stories that are typical of old women. Rather, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; [8] for bodily training is just slightly beneficial, but godliness is beneficial for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. [9] It is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance. [10] For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all mankind, especially of believers. [11]  Prescribe and teach these things. [12] Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe. [13] Until I come, give your attention to the public reading, to exhortation, and teaching. [14] Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was granted to you through words of prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders. [15] Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all. [16] Pay close attention to yourself and to the teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

Note for 20250703

I say this often, that this is a favorite chapter of mine, but for this chapter it is also true. It holds a special place for me, for it was given to me when a counsel of Elders played hands on me, when I was young. If only I walked in the way sooner, nonetheless, now I am. I still fall short, but I am walking it.

Before we get into the example bit, I want to bring special attention to this verse:

1 Timothy 4:10 NASB2020

[10] For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all mankind, especially of believers.

https://bible.com/bible/2692/1ti.4.10.NASB2020

Think about it a bit, as we remember yesterday's message too. We have to be very careful of exclusion for GOD is the Judge of all in heaven and earth. GOD is the Saviour of all mankind... Especially believers. Look what GOD says to Moses:

Exodus 33:19 NASB2020

[19] And He said, “I Myself will make all My goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the name of the Lord before you; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show compassion to whom I will show compassion.”

https://bible.com/bible/2692/exo.33.19.NASB2020

A dead man fell on the body of the buried Prophet Elisha, and was raised from the dead, intended to lay in the dust, but GOD gave him back his life. (2 Kings 13:20-21) We would be wise to leave Judgment to GOD, and concentrate on forgiveness as Christ taught us in Matthew 6.

Now, we can look at the example Timothy is called to live. I favor the way it is written in the KJV,

1 Timothy 4:12 KJV

[12] Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

https://bible.com/bible/1/1ti.4.12.KJV

But, in rightly dividing the Word, we must also remember that this was said to Timothy, a minister, even the one called to establish and bring to order the church in Ephesus. This scripture was intended for Timothy specifically, and those that stand in ministerial positions, how can a new convert attain this, except it be given him by the LORD? For days now, and I hope longer than that in what I have been sharing with you, I have stood up for the mercy of the sinner, because for such as I, Jesus came for. But, it is also prudent for me to say that it is a worthy thing to strive for perfection in Jesus Christ. Mercy in judgment, but perfection in our few as we walk after the Spirit and perfection in Christ, even to become godly. And we know that the flesh is in contention with the Spirit, and the flesh wants to drag us back into sin and condemnation. The carnal is indeed at enmity with GOD.

So while intended for ministers, it is a good goal to set for yourself, to concentrate on our own walk before the LORD and believers, not only in our striving for perfection, but to avoid at all cost being hypocrites. Which is actually quite a difficult thing. Because the flesh yearns for unrighteous things and the Spirit forbids it. So, the flesh is at enmity with the Spirit.

Now, this I say of myself, what I have found. To my own flesh I show little mercy, as I am eager to correct all matters within me to please God, but with others, I try to show mercy for I know the struggle within. For such things do we fast, to submit the flesh to the Spirit, that the Spirit may reign in us towards the fulfillment of GOD'S law. Not for Salvation, for that is a free gift of GOD in Jesus Christ, but as to live a life pleasing to GOD. And then, our progress might be seen, as it is written here by Paul to Timothy, then we can hope for a favorable outcome.

1 Timothy 4:16 KJV

[16] Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

Don't you know yet, to live in Christ is to live in the Word of GOD?

Selah, Shalom.

Verse of The Day

From the YouVersion Bible App

John 20:29 NASB2020

[29] Jesus *said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you now believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

https://bible.com/bible/2692/jhn.20.29.NASB2020

Note:

Are you blessed then? Do you believe without having seen Jesus Christ? Understand the mercy of Jesus Christ that He spoke out such a blessing over you. You have not seen Christ, have you, you only heard His Words and believed. Be blessed of the LORD then, if you believe.

From Jonah

Jonah 3:9-10 KJV

[9] Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? [10] And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.

Jonah 4:11 KJV

[11] and should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
