The Gospel of Jesus Christ

According to Matthew

Part 133 - Mat 14 - Save Me

Watch at:

Matthew 14:1-36 KJV

[1] At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus, [2] and said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him. [3] For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. [4] For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. [5] And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. [6] But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. [7] Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask. [8] And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger. [9] And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. [10] And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. [11] And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother. [12] And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus. [13] When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities. [14] And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick. [15] And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. [16] But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. [17] And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. [18] He said, Bring them hither to me. [19] And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. [20] And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. [21] And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children. [22] And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. [23] And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. [24] But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. [25] And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. [26] And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. [27] But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. [28] And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. [29] And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. [30] But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. [31] And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? [32] And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. [33] Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. [34] And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret. [35] And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased; [36] and besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.

“Save Me”

The one who has come to Christ knows this sentiment of "Save Me." However, there are many that have not come to this moment in their lives yet, the moment of being so deep in trouble that it requires an act of GOD to save. Truth is, we are all in that moment all the time, we just don't perceive it with clarity.

Peter stepped out in faith on the water, walked on it as Jesus did.

Matthew 14:30-31 KJV

[30] But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. [31] And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

We are somewhat like that. We don't walk on water, but in a sense we do. By our faith, we step out of our comfort, doing things we never thought we would do, in sight of our Saviour. Then tribulations come, and sometimes we are of little faith. We cry to God, "Save Me!"

Did Peter drown? He was of little faith at that moment, but did he drown; or did Jesus immediately stretch forth His arm, grabbed him and saved him? So, even in the little faith he had, according to the Words of Jesus, did he perish? You see, Peter called out to the Saviour and was saved. Immediately, in the moment of his failing. Despite his little faith, he did not perish there in the sea.

But, and we might miss this sometimes, Peter was not the only one that was afraid. The disciples on the ship were frightened and thought it was a ghost walking on the water. Jesus relieved them by proclaiming that it was Him, and all of them were saved out of the stormy conditions. Let us look at the account of John briefly again, it has been a while since we have read it.

John 6:20-21 KJV

[20] But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid. [21] Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

There was more than one miracle in the fourth watch of that night, friends. Jesus walked on the water, so did Peter, but this here is on par with the feeding of the multitude the previous day. When Peter cried, "Save me!" Jesus immediately grabbed him and here we see, when they received him into the ship, immediately they were at land. Their fears subsided.

But, there is another fear in our reading today. John the Baptist's killer, Herod. Were his fears pacified? Did he call out to Jesus? Did he receive the Messiah into his courts at this time? I say, "at this time," because later, he would stand in judgment of Jesus Christ. Was he saved?

You cannot just shout "Save me," Peter cried out to Jesus on his way to Christ. He was following Jesus. Let me show you something, and this might come as a shock to you.

Judges 10:14 KJV

[14] Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation.

Israel was crying out to GOD, after they had gone after strange gods. And this is GOD's reply to them. But, I would rob you if I do not at least quote the verses that follow on that statement.

Judges 10:15-16 KJV

[15] And the children of Israel said unto the LORD, We have sinned: do thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; deliver us only, we pray thee, this day. [16] And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD: and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

Did Herod repent at any time that we know of? You cannot disrespect GOD and our Lord Jesus Christ and expect Him to save you when you get a little scared. Peter and the other disciples gave up everything to follow Christ, and Israel is GOD's nation. They repented and put away their false idols.

Now, today's message might be a little harsh. What is your faith in? Your job, your bank account? Or maybe like Herod, you find comfort in the arms of your brother's wife. Maybe you are pleased by the damsel dancing for you, and promise her whatsoever she might ask of you. I know, I make an extreme case here, but is your faith in Christ at least? Do you Honour our Father in Heaven, that it is He that provides for your daily needs, or do you buy all you want from your own wallet.

The question is whether you can call to Christ for Salvation, whether He will stretch forth His hand to you, when you are of little faith. Would that be the greatest point of your faith, or when your faith is too little to save you? But, I want to leave you with some comfort (though it will bring some fear to others) from the passage where Paul quotes from Exodus 33:19

Romans 9:15-16 KJV

[15] For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. [16] So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

Solomon writes that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Who is it that you fear in reverence?

"Save me," Lord Jesus, for I am often of little faith and I want to have more faith in You.
