The Gospel of Jesus Christ

According to Matthew

Part 127 - Mat 9 - Sheep without a Shepherd

Watch at:

Matthew 9:1-38 KJV

[1] And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. [2] And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. [3] And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. [4] And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? [5] For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? [6] But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. [7] And he arose, and departed to his house. [8] But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.  [9] And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. [10] And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. [11] And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? [12] But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. [13] But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.  [14] Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not? [15] And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast. [16] No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. [17] Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.  [18] While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. [19] And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples. [20] And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: [21] for she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. [22] But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. [23] And when Jesus came into the ruler's house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise, [24] he said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. [25] But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose. [26] And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land. [27] And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. [28] And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. [29] Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. [30] And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. [31] But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country. [32] As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. [33] And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel. [34] But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils. [35] And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.  [36] But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. [37] Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; [38] Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

Note for 20250601

By now, it is my hope that as you read here in Matthew of the miracles Jesus performed, that you can add from what you have learned in the other Gospels to what you have read. So you know when Christ said to the damsel that was dead, "Talitha Cumi." If not, here is a worthy cause for you to search it out. I hope you saw that Christ to the blind men He healed to tell no man, and yet they published it abroad.

Standing here towards the end of this series now, we are fortunate though, because now we are afforded to look at those things that will often be read past without getting much attention, since we read much of this for the fourth time now. That is besides the times that you have heard of it from others speaking on it. So, let us get to the verses that speak to the title of today's note, "Sheep without a Shepherd."

Matthew 9:36-38 KJV

[36] But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. [37] Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; [38] Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

Now, Who is the Good Shepherd? (I hope you can answer that.) So, why is it written here then that Jesus says that the disciples must pray that the Lord of the Harvest will send more workers? Why the need for more workers then? Surely Christ can speak to all as He spoke to us? To understand this, the concept of being in Christ must be shared, that we are wholly dependent on Him. The workers do their part, each as they are called to do, so the harvest may be brought in. Let's look at some verses elsewhere.

John 15:5 KJV

[5] I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

It is Christ in us that directs us to our work and the authority and power in Him, so too, the praise and honour. Paul explains this further.

Ephesians 1:22-23 KJV

[22] and hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, [23] which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

https://bible.com/bible/1/eph.1.22-23.KJV

Ephesians 4:15-16 KJV

[15] but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: [16] from whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Bringing in the harvest is a labour, friends. Actually, it is a labour that we are called to do, did you know that? Those that mind the flock of GOD are what we know as ministers and pastors today, but they mainly care for those who already came to faith, in a "walk in" type of way. The workers, to bring the harvest in, are more so those that go out into the field and say something like, "won't you join me to go to church?" (Though there is much more to it,) these are known as evangelists in today's terminology, something that all of us are called to do who believe in Jesus Christ. Look carefully though, there are many parts to this body of Jesus Christ. Just make sure, you have not become a dormant cell in it, or worse, cancerous. (A dormant church testifies of dormant members)

Romans 10:14-15 KJV

[14] How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? [15] And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

https://bible.com/bible/1/rom.10.14-15.KJV

Not everyone is a shepherd of God's flock, and believe me, the serious servant of GOD knows about the stewardship he has for those who belong to GOD. But we must shine our light in darkness, so we can shine out the truth of Jesus Christ in our everyday environments. "Many are called, but few are chosen," not everybody needs to be pastors and ministers, or serve in the music ministry or even pour the tea. But, in someway or form, each of us are evangelists of something while we interact with this world. The question then really comes to this: What are your words and deeds preaching to others? The truth is not always pleasant to hear, my friends.

Matthew 12:30 KJV

[30] He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.

https://bible.com/bible/1/mat.12.30.KJV

On whose "team" are you then? I ask this while you have the opportunity to change teams still. The situation is not too far gone, especially if you read or listen here. But, there are many that will never read these words, nor hear them. So! It is up to us to go and shine the Light of Jesus Christ out there in the world. We are not of this world, but in it... to shine!

It is not just about preaching with words, but also what we do and do not do and say. Not living after righteousness can cause just as much harm. As Christians, we are observed, especially so to bring accusations against us, don't you know that. When does the following verse become a problem for us at the judgment seat of Christ?

Romans 14:13 KJV

[13] Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way.

https://bible.com/bible/1/rom.14.13.KJV

Or, (once again)...

Matthew 25:40 KJV

[40] And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

https://bible.com/bible/1/mat.25.40.KJV

At this very moment of me writing here, there are many in church, hearing from their pastors and ministers. And here I am, sharing in the way I can. Who will hear then? How will those who stayed at home hear, unless someone is sent to them? Have you asked yourself why you are where you are in life yet? Could this that I have spoken to you about today be the answer to that?

Let your lights shine for Jesus Christ. Become a worker in the harvest field of GOD.
