Part 98 - Luke 11 - The Lord’s Prayer

Watch at:

Luke 11:1-13 KJV

[1] And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. [2] And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. [3] Give us day by day our daily bread. [4] And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. [5] And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; [6] for a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? [7] And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. [8] I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. [9] And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. [10] For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. [11] If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? [12] Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? [13] If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Note for 20250427

I have looked forward to the opportunity to speak to you about the Lord's Prayer. Those that listen to the recordings will know, I open every recording with the Lord's prayer, just as I open each day with it. Now, most of us were taught the manner in which it is written in Matthew, so Luke's account might feel a little strange.

Matthew 6:9-13 KJV

[9] After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. [10] Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. [11] Give us this day our daily bread. [12] And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. [13] And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Now in Matthew the account goes into the forgiveness, if we do not forgive, then we will not be forgiven, but here in Luke it goes from there into this Teaching of how we give good things to our children, and that GOD will "outdo us" to put it in simple words. Note though, what it specified here in verse 13.

Luke 11:13 KJV

[13] If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

https://bible.com/bible/1/luk.11.13.KJV

Now, we have in times past looked at what "holy" means as we compared it also to the words Nazarite, which means set apart. So is GOD Holy, for He is set apart from wickedness. And the Holy Spirit, is the Spirit set apart for GOD, since our breath comes from GOD (Genesis 2:7) Now how does this happen, well it is the Lord's prayer that is answered in our lives.

Look, Thy Kingdom come...

Luke 17:21 KJV

[21] neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

https://bible.com/bible/1/luk.17.21.KJV

1 John 4:1 KJV

[1] Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

https://bible.com/bible/1/1jn.4.1.KJV

Now, for the Lord's Kingdom to come, His will needs to become senior in our lives. That means, instead of doing it our way, we do it in the LORD'S way, ie. As the Word of GOD says it should be done. For the will of GOD is of Heaven, and our will here of the world. Do you understand? I do not want to risk a misunderstanding because of an assumption that we all understand this in the same way. That means, we lay our own will, in thought and heart, down before the Throne of GOD and take up His will, instead of our own. As much, we lay down our crown to rule over our own lives, and accept GOD'S reign over us, especially in what we do and say.

Now, man cannot attain this by himself, and for this purpose is the Spirit of GOD poured out on us. Look what the LORD said to Jeremiah:

Jeremiah 1:12 KJV

[12] Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it.

https://bible.com/bible/1/jer.1.12.KJV

Do you understand to focus on what you ask for, you will receive and then the Highlight in verse 13, that He will give the Holy Spirit. You see, if we are within the will of GOD, if we walk after the Spirit and not after the flesh, the LORD (in us) will work in us towards upholding the Word of GOD. Sadly, this does mean that when we sin that we have walked away from Him, but as soon as we repent, He is like the merciful Father Christ portrayed for us in the Parable of the Lost Son.

I was hoping that I would get through the entire Lord's Prayer today, but now, other responsibilities I have are already starting to draw very near. So the close of the prayer is then also a reaffirmation that the Kingdom is our Father's so is the strength (because we do not overcome in our own strength but His) and the glory, for how can we take glory for what GOD has done. We are sinners, but the good that comes from us is of GOD. Without it, we have become like animals and sinners, who cannot repent. The opening of the prayer and the closing, this speaks in much the same way of the Glory of GOD.

I like the version in Luke for the daily Bread, "day by day" as our reliance on GOD stretches over all the days of our lives, as He sustains the breath in us, one by one. And here in Luke, we ask for forgiveness, because we forgive one another, placing it that it is implemented already. I prefer the ending in Matthew over the account in Luke, but luckily we have both, hey?

If it seems a little rushed here to the end, it is because it somewhat is. As I said, I have to get on to other things that require me, still for the Word and service to GOD.

May the LORD Bless and Keep you. And to those who listen to recording later, it won't be rushed then. You can find this note later on www.thehouseofbread.co.za with all the links, video and audio.

Verse of The Day

From the YouVersion Bible App (Extended from verse 38)

Luke 19:37-40 KJV

[37] And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; [38] saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. [39] And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples. [40] And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
