Part 11 - John 8 - No Condemnation

The Audio Version of today’s note

John 8:1-11 KJV

[1] Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. [2] And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. [3] And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, [4] they say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. [5] Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? [6] This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. [7] So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. [8] And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. [9] And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. [10] When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? [11] She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

Note for 20241210

Based on this account and others that are written down it almost appears as if Jesus took more issue with hypocrisy than anything else. Because of the conscience of those that brought accusation against this woman, and by that which Christ has said to them, no man could condemn this woman even though she was caught in the very act of adultery. None could say that they were without sin, but Christ could, yet did He not condemn her either.

Do you remember when Nathaniel was called to Christ, how he was sceptical whether Jesus was indeed the Christ; Jesus said to him that when he was under the tree He saw him, and then Nathaniel believed. I wonder if perhaps, in this case, Christ was scribbling in the earth the Law that was given to Moses. Maybe even just this one, "thou shalt not kill," or maybe, "love your neighbour as yourself." From what we have, we do not know what Christ wrote on the ground, but we do know that all those who accused this woman were brought to shame.

Do you think we might be more merciful with others if only we will remember our own sin? How were we pardoned of our sin by the Lord Jesus Christ, and as He hung upon that cross for us, He hung upon that cross for others? It might further be helpful to recall a time when we were in such trouble before the throne of GOD and the accusations of our fellow man, when we are dealing with another who has transgressed against GOD or us. Maybe we can recall the Lord's prayer, that our trespasses may be forgiven as we forgive those that trespass against us. Judge not, lest you be judged.

Because of what Christ has done for this world, what power does sin have over man? Did Christ not even say to the sinner on the cross besides Him that he would enter into paradise with Him, when he believed in Him? Paul writes in Romans 8:1, "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit". And here in the scripture today, Jesus even refrain from condemning the woman caught in adultery. There is thus mercy for the sinner, grace from GOD for Salvation, if only we can believe and sin no more. Each of us knows a time when we were in trouble, and what Christ has done for this woman we read about here today, He has done for us; without condemnation.

I trust the Lord that He will testify Himself of those things that we must know, each day; this one and also all those to come. What I received today then, I will share with you and it is this...

Psalm 40:1-17 KJV

[1] I waited patiently for the LORD; And he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. [2] He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. [3] And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: Many shall see it, and fear, And shall trust in the LORD. [4] Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, And respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. [5] Many, O LORD my God, Are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, And thy thoughts which are to us-ward: They cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered. [6] Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; Mine ears hast thou opened: Burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required. [7] Then said I, Lo, I come: In the volume of the book it is written of me, [8] I delight to do thy will, O my God: Yea, thy law is within my heart. [9] I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: Lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest. [10] I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness, And thy truth from the great congregation. [11] Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: Let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me. [12] For innumerable evils have compassed me about: Mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; They are more than the hairs of mine head: Therefore my heart faileth me. [13] Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: O LORD, make haste to help me. [14] Let them be ashamed and confounded together That seek after my soul to destroy it; Let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil. [15] Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame That say unto me, Aha, aha. [16] Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: Let such as love thy salvation say continually, the LORD be magnified. [17] But I am poor and needy; Yet the Lord thinketh upon me: Thou art my help and my deliverer; Make no tarrying, O my God.

Now you have witnessed the love of GOD, even of His Only Begotten Son, our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Speak no longer in forms of condemnation, but bless one another with the hope you have in Christ.

John 13:34-35 KJV

[34] A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. [35] By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
