Note for 2024/06/20 - ‭Romans 16:1-27 KJV‬ - Overcomers

‭Romans 16:1-27 KJV‬

[1] I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: [2] that ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also. [3] Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus: [4] who have for my life laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles. [5] Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Salute my wellbeloved Epænetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia unto Christ. [6] Greet Mary, who bestowed much labour on us. [7] Salute Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen, and my fellowprisoners, who are of note among the apostles, who also were in Christ before me. [8] Greet Amplias my beloved in the Lord. [9] Salute Urbane, our helper in Christ, and Stachys my beloved. [10] Salute Apelles approved in Christ. Salute them which are of Aristobulus' household. [11] Salute Herodion my kinsman. Greet them that be of the household of Narcissus, which are in the Lord. [12] Salute Tryphena and Tryphosa, who labour in the Lord. Salute the beloved Persis, which laboured much in the Lord. [13] Salute Rufus chosen in the Lord, and his mother and mine. [14] Salute Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermas, Patrobas, Hermes, and the brethren which are with them. [15] Salute Philologus, and Julia, Nereus, and his sister, and Olympas, and all the saints which are with them. [16] Salute one another with an holy kiss. The churches of Christ salute you. [17] Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. [18] For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. [19] For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil. [20] And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. [21] Timotheus my workfellow, and Lucius, and Jason, and Sosipater, my kinsmen, salute you. [22] I Tertius, who wrote this epistle, salute you in the Lord. [23] Gaius mine host, and of the whole church, saluteth you. Erastus the chamberlain of the city saluteth you, and Quartus a brother. [24] The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. [25] Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, [26] but now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith: [27] to God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen. Written to the Romans from Corinthus, and sent by Phebe servant of the church at Cenchrea.

Note for 2024/06/20

And with that, we have come to the end of the letter of Romans.

Friends, note how there is a personal message of and to specific people too. See it as commendation and validations of those tried and tested. But we also have a word of warning about those who cause divisions, that division is not of the Lord. I think, most impactful to me today, is a similarity in the text today, and that which we find in Genesis 3, regarding the crushing of Satan underfoot.

The Book of Romans has brought us much insight to the faith, it increased us in wisdom and knowledge. So, even all these years later, it is still so valuable to guide us on our way.

A while ago, I asked, what may a letter from the Apostle to us be like. If those who believed first had to consider our ways today. Just as I think that I have learned much, I read something that surprised me again. We are the body of Christ, aren't we? "And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly." (from verse 20) Let that linger in you for a bit.

If we are to overcome, what is it that must be overcome? Dare I ask, what nature must be subdued, even lay under our feet and crushed? What is it that we must resist? Are we not to subdue the desires of the flesh, even forgo the carnal mind, and substitute it with Faith? For by the carnal mind do we make plans, even backup plans should our faith fail us. Do we then plan for failure, and do such plans not validate our weakness in faith? If the Lord determines my days, even the length of my life here on earth; why do I plan to save myself? Who is this unbeliever I spot within myself? I told you, I am a fellow traveler with you. I share with you deeply personal things. Is this then not a common weakness, for then I am alone in need of reform. I admit, the Lord has not failed me, not even once; He has brought me through all things. I still stand, where many others have failed and I know it is not of me, for it is the Lord that rescued me. I have food and shelter and I am even still among those that love me. I am blessed, by the Grace of GOD am I spared. Who am I to GOD, that He has spared me? I share with you, as I learn myself from the Word of GOD. If Satan is to be crushed under our feet, who then must resist him so he shall flee? I must resist the devil, is he then not in those things that troubles me in the flesh? Is he then not in those things I desire after the flesh, that is not of GOD? If I then resist and the devil flees, am I then not delivered? And, how does that come without repentance, even regret of what I have found myself to be a partaker of? To resist, is to go against, what am I then against, the flesh or the instruction of GOD? So, by the Word of GOD I learn what is still unclean within me, so I am washed by the Word of GOD, and faith is the strength from GOD that empowers me to resist the error I have found in me. And as I resist, the devil will flee and I will have become an overcomer in Jesus Christ who is the Word of GOD in me, by the Holy Spirit of GOD, poured out in me. Is that then not the purging of wickedness and the adoption of righteousness, all taking place here within me, even as I breathe? So, am I laying down the old man, and adopting the new man, born of the Spirit of GOD. Then can I walk and sin no more. The carnal mind is then of this world, even the heart and strength, but he that overcomes then do so by the spiritual mind that is of Christ by the Holy Spirit working in us. Is it wise to trust that which yearns to guide you to an everlasting death, or to Trust the Word of GOD that leads us in Christ Jesus to everlasting life? So, indeed, it is the GOD of peace that will crush Satan under our feet. For when we overcome, the devil has fled from us and we are delivered from the hold he had on us.

So much has been added to our understanding, which leaves me to stand in gratitude to GOD. For the sake of sharing with you, that means that there is something I can indeed do, I can resist the devil and I can love and trust in the LORD my GOD. It is not new to me, but now defined in a way that I can understand and share with others. All this, that I have just shared with you, at long last, I can verbalize what the Lord has done in me for many years. How amazing is it that the Lord has done that in me, before I could even communicate it to anybody else. Then, do I not stand witness to what the Lord has done in me?

The Lord is awesome. And you have just witnessed something happening in real time. I told you, I am just a fellow traveler with you, a sojourner in this world not of it, on my way home.

Shalom

YouVersion Bible verse of the Day

(Expanded from verse 19)

‭Matthew 6:19-23 KJV‬

[19]  Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: [20] but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: [21] for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. [22] The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. [23] But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
