The Gospel of Jesus Christ

According to Matthew

Part 136 - Mat 17 - Free Children

Watch at:

Matthew 17:1-27 KJV

[1] And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, [2] and was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. [3] And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him. [4] Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. [5] While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. [6] And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. [7] And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. [8] And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only. [9] And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead. [10] And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come? [11] And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. [12] But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. [13] Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist. [14] And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, [15] Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. [16] And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. [17] Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. [18] And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. [19] Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? [20] And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. [21] Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. [22] And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: [23] and they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry. [24] And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? [25] He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? [26] Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free. [27] Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

Note for 20250611

So much was said in this chapter, now we have looked at the mount of transfiguration before, when Moses and Elijah came to Christ and He shone in all His Glory. Even of how GOD declared Jesus as His Son, and said to those in hearing (also to us) "hear Him."

On the healing of this boy, I will only share this with you, that we read here of faith, once more the CJB has it as Trust. Which really challenges many on the concept of faith itself, that it speaks of trust in God.

But a matter that does not get as much attention as it should, is the matter of paying tribute, or tax as we know it today. I want to bring it to you again, and look at that in a little more detail. Especially because of the worldly saying, "Two things you can be certain of is death and taxes."

Matthew 17:25-27 KJV

[25] He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? [26] Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free. [27] Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee.

So, should we pay our tributes? And the answer is yes, to prevent offense. But, once more there is a clear division made, between the children and the strangers. I want to take you to the prayer of Jesus Christ, as found in John 17.

John 17:14-16 KJV

[14] I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. [15] I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. [16] They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

There are other verses, but I wanted you to hear how Jesus prayed to our Father in Heaven regarding us who have received the Word and joined Him. We are sojourners in this world, strangers in it. We are children of another Kingdom, just as Jesus proclaimed in His trial before Pilate. Do you remember the note on, "Render unto Caesar?" Let me remind you who you are. (a short extract)

Matthew 5:3-10 KJV

[3]  Blessed are the poor in spirit: for their's is the kingdom of heaven. [4]  Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. [5]  Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. [6]  Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. [7]  Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. [8]  Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. [9]  Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. [10]  Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for their's is the kingdom of heaven.

Of course, it is better to brush up on your knowledge of Matthew 5, especially with Christ's statement here, that the Children are free. You must see taxes or tribute as a form of toll fee to use or stay in a place in which you are a stranger at this time. But the lesson is not on the taxes, but Whose Children you are. It is to learn what Christ prayed to His (and our) Father in Heaven.

For now, this world is still in the grip of the prince of this world, he will be bound for a thousand years, before he is cast into the lake of fire. Christ is clear, the meek will inherit the Earth. Now, I am not speaking of riches as the world presents, but as GOD gives, but just look at what I found in Job, or more aptly, what GOD has led me to.

Job 27:16-19 KJV

[16] Though he heap up silver as the dust, And prepare raiment as the clay; [17] He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, And the innocent shall divide the silver. [18] He buildeth his house as a moth, And as a booth that the keeper maketh. [19] The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: He openeth his eyes, and he is not.

I want to ask you a question. When our King comes, and drives out this robber of mankind, to who will the Earth belong then? Who will be the children of that Kingdom and rule and reign with Christ, here on Earth for a thousand years, and an eternity with Him in Heaven? Who will be sojourners then? I don't want you to be ignorant regarding these things, friends. Does GOD change? Whose Law was given to Israel, that of Moses or GOD'S Law? What happens then, when Grace is done? When the prince of this World is bound? Shall "an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth" return?

1 Corinthians 6:3 KJV

[3] Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?

https://bible.com/bible/1/1co.6.3.KJV

Now I ask you, who carries the witness against this world? Who has been persecuted and gone through the trials? Who are the witnesses for that trial to come? Why is the first resurrection set before the millennium and the second after the final battle between good and evil at the end? Yes! Hear this:

John 5:28-29 KJV

[28] Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, [29] and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

2 Corinthians 10:3-6 KJV

[3] For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: [4] (for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) [5] casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; [6] and having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
