The Gospel of Jesus Christ

According to Matthew

Part 128 - Mat 10 - Sheep Amongst Wolves

Watch at:

Matthew 10:1-42 KJV

[1] And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. [2] Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; [3] Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphæus, and Lebbæus, whose surname was Thaddæus; [4] Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.  [5] These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: [6] but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. [7] And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. [8] Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. [9] Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses, [10] nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat. [11] And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence. [12] And when ye come into an house, salute it. [13] And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. [14] And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. [15] Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. [16]  Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. [17] But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; [18] and ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles. [19] But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. [20] For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you. [21] And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death. [22] And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved. [23] But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come. [24] The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. [25] It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household? [26]  Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. [27] What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops. [28] And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. [29] Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. [30] But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. [31] Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. [32] Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. [33] But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. [34]  Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. [35] For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. [36] And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. [37] He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. [38] And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. [39] He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. [40]  He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. [41] He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward. [42] And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

Note for 20250602

For The believer it is not a strange matter to be hated, and this chapter is not an ideal to recruit disciples by the standards of mankind. This might be the source for so many to rather fill the ears of those who listen with promises of riches in this world. But, this chapter stands in stark contrast to such teachings. Christ outlines here what level of hate we will have to endure, even from those of our own households. Now, there are quite a few principles here that you will hardly ever hear ministers preach about, and those that do, often have lost hope.

Matthew 10:22 KJV

[22] And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

https://bible.com/bible/1/mat.10.22.KJV

This verse here speaks against the "once saved always saved" theology and clearly marks that those that endure unto the end will be saved. The same can be seen in Revelation 2 and 3. Ever wondered why long-suffering and self-control is mentioned among the gifts of the Spirit? Friends, this chapter is hardly a Sunday-morning's "feel good" sermon. Who has lost a friend or a family member for the sake of the name of Jesus Christ? If then lost, we're they ever yours to begin with? This chapter speaks for itself, if we are worthy to receive it.

So, what then is our task, as sheep sent out amongst wolves. Shall we leave our peace in a wicked house? Yes, I say our peace, for we are one with Jesus Christ, not? We are to be wise as serpents, gentle as doves.

Ephesians 6:12 KJV

[12] For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

https://bible.com/bible/1/eph.6.12.KJV

Who are we then standing against and why do we need the whole armour of GOD? You see, this world wants you to proclaim an altered Gospel. One that will not rock the boat or speak against the elite of this world. We are not of this world, remember, we are the elect of GOD. This world is in enmity with GOD, so are its practices and pleasures.

This world has taught man an alternative gospel, one that is infused with lies. Case and point:

Matthew 10:23 KJV

[23] But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.

https://bible.com/bible/1/mat.10.23.KJV

How do you explain this verse away? Do we follow Christ or a man? I ask again: will the Father and the Son not come and make their abode with us?

John 14:23 KJV

[23] Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

https://bible.com/bible/1/jhn.14.23.KJV

Do we find both our peace and rest in Christ? That is true. But, it is a peace unlike this world proclaims peace to be. Peace can be attained in doing what is righteous, even if it leaves you in contention with mankind. David had a practical example of it, being hated by his father in law, King Saul. Shall we speak of Absolom? Look at Matthew 10:22 again, "hated of all men" for the sake of Jesus Christ's name. A small little thing that I learned when I quit drinking, that the drinkers do not trust a man that doesn't drink. I suppose it is because we are not of the same spirit. Man trusts only those who they have "dirt" on to keep their secrets hidden. It is foolish to think that you can be at peace with a godless world. Peace comes from within, from the I dwelling of the Father and the Son.

Hebrews 13:5 KJV

[5] Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

https://bible.com/bible/1/heb.13.5.KJV

In Matthew 10, Christ tells us too what our Mission here in the world be like, and there is an encouragement to endure unto the end. It is at this point that I want to remind you of Romans 8, more specifically verse 1.

Romans 8:1 KJV

[1]  There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

https://bible.com/bible/1/rom.8.1.KJV

Do you walk after the Spirit or the flesh? Who are you in league with? And... Who are they in league with that comes against you for your faith in Jesus Christ? Where and what is the contention about? Christ came to set the captives free.

Luke 4:18-19 KJV

[18]  The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, Because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, And recovering of sight to the blind, To set at liberty them that are bruised, [19]  To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

https://bible.com/bible/1/luk.4.18-19.KJV

This chapter is not a worldly recruitment, but a heavenly recruitment, for we stand in stark contrast to the way of the world. For that, we will be hated in our alliance with Jesus Christ. Endure until the end friends. Remain in the doctrine of Jesus Christ.

Matthew 18:3-5 KJV

[3] and said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. [4] Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. [5] And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.
