According to Luke

Part 102 - Luke 12 - Are You Ready

Watch at:

Luke 12:22-40 KJV

[22] And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. [23] The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. [24] Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? [25] And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? [26] If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? [27] Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. [28] If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith? [29] And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. [30] For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. [31] But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.  [32]  Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. [33] Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. [34] For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. [35] Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; [36] and ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately. [37] Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. [38] And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. [39] And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through. [40] Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

Are You Ready

I don't know if it is just me, or if this is something that everyone is going through right now, but have you been dealing with more than usual of late? It appears, at least from when we did the Note on "No Ordinary Day," that dimensions have shifted in some way. It is as if old problems have come knocking at our doors again. And I know, the error must be in me. Is this a last call?

You know, sometimes we can get so involved with deeper things that we neglect the basic things. Then, when confronted by the Truth, can we still repent? Am I the one to be credited for the good work that is being done, or is it The LORD that has brought those good things in? Of course it is the LORD, I am well aware of my own limitations and that the good in me is of Him. And here, in the text of this morning's reading, the problem is highlighted. Whose Kingdom am I building up, God's or mine? Am I the light that I have read of, or is Jesus Christ the Light that shines in me, the Living Word, that dwells in me? Writing it out, of course, the answer is quite clear, not?

This morning's scripture speaks so beautiful to this specific situation that I am facing yet once more in my life. Righteousness is of Christ, it is not what I have achieved, but a gift received in the Love of GOD.

Friends, I am the last one that can point you in a direction. All I can do is point you at our Lord and Saviour. He saved me. But, we must not become so busy with the things of GOD, that we forget the GOD that reigns over all things. I am just a man, on the very same journey here on earth that all men go through. Jesus is the Saviour, not me. It might seem redundant to say it, because surely all should know that, but do we really? Does our lives stand as an example of that, or does "sell all that you have and give alms" disappear from our reading this morning? Does it matter that it is red letter text?

When you are travelling on a certain road, is it not wise to check every now and then if you are still heading in the right direction? For the believer, this scripture here today is a call for a "self-check" day-by-day. You know, the Lilly stands in the field, it is planted, it lives as long as it stays where it is and depends on GOD to send the rain. But, the crow is one who travels here and there. We even have the saying, "as the crow flies." Which one of these are then where it should be, the one that is as it is planted, or the one created to fly? That brings us to GOD'S purpose for our lives, and here we are assured that GOD cares for both. But, even the raven needs to sit down to rest at times, yes, it has a nest to which it returns.

This scripture today is all about placing our trust in GOD. And when we get to that moment where we reflect on where we are, we have a measure by which we can "check" if we are still on course. What then if we find that we are not quite on the same road where we began? Do we not return to what we know? Now, the Hope is that we will get our direction from the Lord, at least. It is also on this, that we will not become so stubborn again that we fail to see when an adjustment is needed to get back on course. It comes back to the question that has been raised so often in the past writings, are we ready yet?

Luke 12:40 KJV

[40] Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

Now, of all that I have read in the Word of GOD, and all that I have learned. There is also this, that man still needs rest. For that purpose, I urge you friends, not to neglect the moment that you have to have this self check moment from time to time.

Matthew 6:33 KJV

[33] But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Friends, do not let this note unsettle you. Don't you check if you have packed everything in the car before you leave on a trip? Do you not check the car has fuel, the oil and tire pressures? Are you ready yet? Or, are you still getting ready? Are you preparing at all? Because some day, this day Christ spoke of here will come. For some, even in this day, it will be today, for the passing of the flesh can come at any point. We are in the valley of the shadow of death, that is, for the flesh. For in Jesus Christ we have the promise of eternal life by what He has done. Not just on the cross, but also within us.
