Note for 2024/07/15 - 1 Timothy 1:1-20 KJV - Shunned
1 Timothy 1:1-20 KJV
[1] Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope; [2] unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. [3] As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, [4] neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. [5] Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: [6] from which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; [7] desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm. [8] But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; [9] knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, [10] for whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; [11] according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust. [12] And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; [13] who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. [14] And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. [15] This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. [16] Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. [17] Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen. [18] This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; [19] holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: [20] of whom is Hymenæus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

Up until now, Paul's writings have been directed unto the churches of congregations in cities, but here we have his letter to Timothy whom he considered a son of his. This is thus written in the same nature as what Solomon wrote most of what we know as Proverbs for his son. It is more personal, a closer relationship by way of close family. Of course, Timothy, not a son by the flesh but by The Spirit in Jesus Christ and for the Gospel. Here we read that Timothy was at Ephesus at the time, and we read some of the matters that required his attention, but guide us also in the same.
Now, of all that is written here in this chapter, the last verse is probably the most controversial, about the two, Paul mentions that he handed over to Satan so they may learn not to blaspheme. What is that?
Paul writes on a similar teaching somewhere else, which I can't recall the book or verse at this precise moment. But, he writes about those who are fellow believers but refusing correction that their flesh be handed over to Satan that their soul may be saved. I suppose that may be where the practice of shunning may stem from, but what is it?
1 Corinthians 5:5 KJV
[5] to deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

I remember, as a child, being told if I do not want to hear then I must feel. Do any of you remember that? Yes, it is a way of exposing someone who refuses to listen to the consequences of his choices. Now, for me, usually that would come just before a hiding; but we see the same trade in the Prophets of GOD warning Israel to repent, or be faced by the consequences of their iniquities. So, Nebechudnessar came and took those in Jerusalem to Babylon into captivity. Hardheaded people are usually more familiar with this, than the obedient.
The matter before us today is how tribulation leads to repentance for the believer. The unbeliever does not repent, and is then swallowed up and removed from the righteous. Do not be mistaken, this is for willful acts of disobedience and a rejection of correction. Under the Law, it is comparable to a child that would not accept their parents' authority over them.
I know, my friends, this is a hard matter. But, we see it in our daily lives. Let say, you warn a friend not to make a trade, but he continues nonetheless; then, by a bad trade he is led down a path where he suffers great loss.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ is much the same, only the warning and the precepts is to save the soul from sin and death. If you live in sin, unrepentant; the reward of it is separation from the Most High Holy GOD. So we read who will not be afforded entry into the city of GOD in Revelations 21.
Revelation 21:8 KJV
[8] But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Revelation 21:27 KJV
[27] And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

And this city is the New Jerusalem, the Bride of Christ, which is the Church. We learn about this too, that what we sow we shall reap. Even in, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Yes, even further still, those who live by the sword will die by the sword. But, if one should then learn the lesson and humble themselves before the Lord, He is quick to forgive, even establishing the way unto Salvation in Jesus Christ our Lord.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ does bring us the hope unto Salvation, but the same teaches us the reward for sin. Refusing Christ Jesus, is refusing Salvation by GOD, for Christ is the vessel of the Salvation of GOD. So, even His Name proclaims, which means "GOD Saves."
Now, I have great concern for mankind's souls. It is the heart of ministry for Christ. That all may be saved. And even as I write here in the same hope unto Salvation, so I also know what the hardheaded ones will face. I was lost and went through my own set of tribulations, for I was hard headed too. So I know, it is by the Love and mercy of GOD that I am saved, and not of my own doing. GOD resists the proud and I was prideful, but my trouble convinced me that I was on the wrong path. The love of self was replaced by a concern for all those GOD loves. Yes, even sinners, for unto sinners He sent His Son for their Salvation, of which I am one. Now, saved by grace, I share the message of Salvation with others. And I, speak from experience, so has my testimony become a true testimony of Jesus Christ my Lord.
Now, he that is quick to listen, does not need the belt or strap. Yes, he escapes the beating on the back. I was slow to listen, so I give my testimony so others do not have to bear the same scars as I do. GOD did not give up on me, but I was rescued from myself even, the moment I repented. But, I must also be true in this, that this world does not love those that go after Christ, but the Lord will establish you in His purpose for you.
Listen carefully to the words of Paul to Timothy, take it as a letter to you too. For it shares with you the righteous way of living for the Gospel of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Psalm 40:1-17 KJV
[1] I waited patiently for the LORD; And he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. [2] He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. [3] And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: Many shall see it, and fear, And shall trust in the LORD. [4] Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, And respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. [5] Many, O LORD my God, Are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, And thy thoughts which are to us-ward: They cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: If I would declare and speak of them, They are more than can be numbered. [6] Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; Mine ears hast thou opened: Burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required. [7] Then said I, Lo, I come: In the volume of the book it is written of me, [8] I delight to do thy will, O my God: Yea, thy law is within my heart. [9] I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: Lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest. [10] I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness, And thy truth from the great congregation. [11] Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: Let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me. [12] For innumerable evils have compassed me about: Mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; They are more than the hairs of mine head: Therefore my heart faileth me. [13] Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: O LORD, make haste to help me. [14] Let them be ashamed and confounded together That seek after my soul to destroy it; Let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil. [15] Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame That say unto me, Aha, aha. [16] Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: Let such as love thy salvation say continually, the LORD be magnified. [17] But I am poor and needy; Yet the Lord thinketh upon me: Thou art my help and my deliverer; Make no tarrying, O my God.
